Plan to run double- decker trains in Andhra Pradesh

Indian Railways is planning to introduce double-decker trains on the Visakhapatnam-Vijayawada-Secunderabad and Visakhapatnam-Vijayawada-Tirupati routes soon.

The railway authorities recently conducted technical survey on the feasibility of running double-decker trains on the two routes, and a report has been submitted to the Commissioner for Railway Safety (CRS), said Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Ashok Kumar.
Disclosing this to the newsmen here on Wednesday, the DRM said after studying the report, CRS will give necessary suggestions and may take up some modifications before giving clearance for the project.

“Once the route for the double-decker train is finalised, a trial run will be conducted and the process may be completed in a couple of months. The Railway Board and the CRS will take a decision on finalising the route,” the DRM added.

South Central Railway (SCR) is planning to operate about 600 special trains for Krishna Pushkarams, scheduled for August this year. The trains will be operated from various places to Vijayawada, Mr. Ashok Kumar said.

For the convenience of pilgrims, railways will attach 2,000 coaches to different trains and give extra stoppage for all express trains passing through the city. Nearly, 2.5 lakh passengers are expected to attend pushkarams by trains every day.

Under Nirbhaya Funds, 25 more Closed Circuit Cameras (CC Cameras) will be installed at Vijayawada railway station in addition to the existing 55 cameras. Besides, platform shelters, additional booking and enquiry counters, electrification, drinking water, toilets, signage boards, public addressing system and other facilities will be provided in the railway stations.

Special Officer

An Officer on Special Duty (OSD) will be deputed in Vijayawada to look after the arrangements for pushkarams and the officer will join soon. About 1,000 additional security personnel from RPF will be deployed during the utsavams, the DRM added.
