Bombardier Transportation has marked delivery of the first metro car for the Delhi Metro from an order for 162 additional vehicles. Benoit Cattin Martel, President, Asia Pacific Region, and Harsh Dhingra, Chief Country Representative, India, from Bombardier Transportation handed over commemorative key for the latest Delhi Metro order to HS Anand, Director Rolling Stock, Delhi Metro. At a ceremony marking the occasion at InnoTrans 2016 in Berlin,Bombardier celebrated delivery of the first of 162 additional metro cars for the Delhi Metro. The occasion saw Benoît Cattin-Martel, President ofBombardier Transportation’s Asia Pacific Region, present a commemorative metro car key to officials led by HS Anand, Director of Rolling Stock from Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (DMRC).

162 additional MOVIA metros to increase capacity on Delhi Metro

The order, placed in June 2015, will increase DMRC’s existing fleet ofBombardier MOVIA metros from 614 to 776. Initially, the new vehicles will accommodate 1,740 passengers in a six-car configuration and are specifically adapted to suit Delhi’s existing infrastructure. Once configured into eight-car sets, the trains will carry as many as 2,400 passengers providing a much needed additional capacity on two of Delhi’s main metro lines.

“The addition of these cars will go a long way in providing safe and comfortable travel to our valued commuters.”

Commenting at the ceremony HS Anand said, “These new cars are being procured by Delhi Metro for services on its presently operational red, blue and yellow lines. These cars will be put into service in a phased manner after the mandatory tests and trials. The addition of these cars will go a long way in providing safe and comfortable travel to our valued commuters.”

Benoît Cattin-Martel added, “The high degree of localisation executed in the project at Bombardier’s Savli and Maneja sites fulfils the requirements of the Indian government’s ‘Make in India’ campaign and Delhi Metro’s indigenous procurement plan that encourages local manufacturing.”

He continued, “Our energy efficient trains have helped the city of Delhiimprove mobility and manage pollution levels as well as provided effective public transport during the 2010 Commonwealth Games. Our vehicles have also contributed to Delhi Metro receiving UN carbon credits, a world’s first for a metro project.”

Efficient Transport systems

Bombardier also showcased its debut of MOVIA Maxx platform – the latest metro rail transport technology. This system is expected to have a higher passenger capacity per coach, better technical configuration to allow more efficient passenger flow and lower equipment life cycle costs. It can also be used to design trains for driverless operations. Using this technology, eight coaches can be expected to carry close to 25 per cent more passengers than the existing MOVIA version that carries 2400 passengers across eight coaches.

Designed for rapidly growing cities around the world, the high capacity MOVIA Maxx metro offers maximum value based on a modular and flexible single solution that can be easily adapted to the specific requirements of operators. Now more than ever, a metro project’s affordability is a vital precondition to its success. MOVIA Maxx metro platform is expected to deliver best value for money in terms of passenger capacity, energy consumption, reliability and availability.

Laurent Troger, President, Bombardier Transportation, said, “Today, countries and governments all across the globe are confronted with similar challenges: urbanization, pollution, digitalization, and population growth, particularly in emerging markets. Rail is already playing a key role in solving these issues but it can do more.”

Apart from this, the company launched new Talent 3 train to solve operational and flexibility challenges to operate and develop a zero emission, energy efficient and cost effective alternative to diesel trains. This train was developed in collaboration with the Technical University of Berlin and its associated partners Südwestdeutsche Verkehrs-AG and Nahverkehrsgesellschaft Baden-Württemberg. The Federal Ministry of Transport is supporting the innovation initiative by offering approximately 4 million euro under the government’s ‘Electro-mobility Funding Guideline Subsidy Directive’.

Germar Wacker, President, Mainline and Metros Division, Central and Eastern Europe, Bombardier Transportation, said, “Bombardier is a leading provider of innovative battery systems for green mobility solutions. With the funds provided by the Federal Ministry of Transport we, together with our partners, will contribute to a leading-edge, sustainable and reliable electric mobility solution for non-electrified tracks. The funding intention confirms our role as an innovation leader who will significantly accelerate the ecological shift from diesel to battery drives.”

Besides this, Bombardier also launched its latest rail control technology, OPTIFLO rail control service solutions, a tool that offers new capabilities to analyse and detect failure patterns, to carry out predictive maintenance operations and automated risk and security assessment for rail signalling systems.

Buoyed by India’s plans to expand rail and metro network, Bombardier Transportation has also exuded confidence over tripling its Indian business revenue to USD 1 billion in the next five years and plans to open an engineering centre in the country.

“Yes, we are very ambitious with that and we are working actively on it (achieving USD 1 billion revenue from India in next five years from the present level of USD 300 million),” Bombardier Transportation President Laurent Troger told PTI here.

Describing Bombardier as a “major player” in India for metro projects, he said, “We are delivering very successfully for the metro in Delhi city. We are key player for the infrastructure… Our ambition is to continue to grow in India and in its cities.”

“We want to design and manufacture the trains in India for India and so we are significantly increasing engineering capability in the country and plan to open engineering center in Hyderabad,” Troger said.

Company chief country representative Harsh Dhingra said Bombardier is targeting the two areas in India — railways and Metros rail projects — and emphasised that huge opportunities lie in the segments with metro rail plans for all cities with a population of over two million.

Earlier, addressing the conference at InnoTrans 2016, Troger said, “We see InnoTrans as an opportunity to engage with our customers and better understand their needs. Today, countries and governments all across the globe are confronted with similar challenges: urbanisation, pollution, digitalisation and population growth, particularly in emerging markets.”

“Rail is already playing a key role in solving these issues but it can do more. At Bombardier Transportation, building the future of mobility together with our customers is at the heart of everything we do,” he said.

Among other products, the company also showcased its ‘MOVIA Maxx metro’, which Troger said is designed to meet the unique needs of rapidly growing cities in terms of passenger capacity, acquisition cost and energy consumption.
