In the Budget Speech 2016, Hon'ble Minister of Railways, Shri Suresh Prabhu had announced setting up of 'Innovation grants to employees, start-ups and small businesses'. Under this initiative, Indian Railways are seeking out solutions to its most critical problems through annual Innovation Challenges.

Recently, in the month of November a 3 day long National Rail Vikas Shivir was held at Suraj Kund near New Delhi for brainstorming and generating new ideas for the betterment of Indian Railways. Five Innovation Challenges has been launched by Shri Narendra Modi, Hon'ble Prime Minister. The 5 Innovation challenges are (1) Design of wagons for efficient loading and transportation of new traffic commodities, (2) Essay Accessibility to Trains from Low Level Platforms, (3) New Ideas/Suggestions to improve the working of Indian Railways, (4) Increasing Passenger carrying capacity of coaches of Indian Railways and (5) Developing New Digital capabilities at the stations of Indian Railways.

In response to Hon'ble Prime Minister's clarion call for innovation in Indian Railways under the Navrachna Initiative, Indian Railways has decided to conduct a public competition o­n the above 5 challenges. Six awards will be given to the finalists of each Innovation Challenge : Ist award – Rs.6 lakh (max), 2nd award – Rs.3 lakh (max), 3rd award – Rs.2 lakh (max) and 3 consolation prizes of Rs.1 lakh each (max).
