TRANSPLANTATION OF TREES

TRANSPLANTATION OF TREES

Devargudda is a crossing station at about 369 KMs from Bengaluru in Bengaluru-Hubballi route. Construction organisation of South Western Railway is executing doubling works in Tumakuru-Arsikere (95 KM) and Chikjajur-Hubballi (194 KM) sections in this route.Devargudda is a two line station in Mysuru Division and on account of doubling, this station is to be developed into four line crossing station.

There are 46 trees of various varieties i.e., Nemalinare, Neem, Delbargia, Sisso, Pumgamia, Albizzia, lebbeck etc. Varying in size from 60 cm to 290 cm girth in proposed alignment of new lines. In normal course these trees are cut and Railway works are done. However, keeping in view the vision of Indian Railways, “ To promote green environment and green energy while making the Indian Railways a global leader in sustainable mass transports”, it was decided to transplant the trees. There are few agencies who have master minded the art of translocation/transplantation of trees and after deep search, an agency Green Morning Horticulture Pvt. Ltd was found, who agreed to execute the work at least possible cost while ensuring the survival at 70-80%. Shri Padmanabhan, Executive Engineer; Shri Sharfuddin, Dy. Chief Engineer and Shri Alok Tiwari, Chief Engineer of Construction are monitoring the translocation work. The work is being done under supervision of Horticulture experts who have transplanted many trees in past at various places. The process involves uprooting the trees with surrounding soil after duly protecting the roots, shifting to new location using crane, transplantation to required depth and further providing manure and fertilizers, pesticides etc. After completion of transplantation work, regular watering is to be done for 6 months and horticulture experts have to visit to see the growth of transplanted trees.

This is a small beginning in South Western Railway for saving the trees and protecting the environment. Railway is also planting trees alongside the tracks even up to Hubballi.

 15 trees on 11th October, 2017; 5 trees on 12th October, 2017; 15 trees on 13thOctober, 2017 are translocated and 11 trees will be translocated on 14th October, 2017.

Day after MNS vandalism, Thane station sports a hawker-free look

Day after MNS vandalism, Thane station sports a hawker-free look

THANE: A day after the activists of the Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena(MNS) vandalized illegal vendors outside Thane railway station, the entire stretch remained hawker-free on Sunday. Commuters had a easy access to the station.

Barring newspaper vendors, there was not a single hawker seen along the nearly 300m-long road under Satis deck. Many vendors must have refrained from set up shop fearing backlash from MNS activists who seemed to be determined to keep the station premises hawker-free.

Around 300 hawkers, most of them hailing from the North, had no option but to watch quietly as the MNS activists broke their carts and threw their wares on the road, causing huge losses during the Saturday violence.

The city police, which is investigating the rioting case, is yet to make arrests. However, cops have been deployed at the spot to prevent any untoward incident from taking place.

Meanwhile, while activists have dismissed the one-day MNS action as a political stunt, commuters have extended their support and are happy with the action taken.

"The hawkers used to block the lanes towards the station. They used to get aggressive if anyone tried to point out their mistake. The authorities must now buckle up and ensure that they do not set up stalls again," said Poonam Sharma, a Thane resident and daily commuter.

Traders also heaved a sigh of relief as most of these hawkers used to blatantly set up stalls outside their shops, blocking footpaths. "The hawkers outside Thane station used to blatantly block space and also indulge in violence. Any attempts to evict them have met with stiff resistance. The authorities were unable to remove them too," said a trader.

The hawkers operating in other parts of the city said they are also under threat of violence as any splinter group could suddenly assault them. Accordingly, they are now pushing for a speedy identification and allocation of hawker zones.

"The hawkers operating in the station area are not affiliated with any association and have set shop at free will. The genuine hawkers operating for years in the city are suffering for no reason now. We will now follow up with the state and municipal administration to speed up the implementation of a hawkers' policy. The menace will not be sorted unless the administration takes some concrete steps," said Shaukat Mulani, president of a hawkers union in Thane.
Meanwhile, the railway administration has claimed to have taken steps to take action against hawkers. "There are no hawkers present on the railway premises. The railway protection force has taken stern action against hawkers this year as compared to last," said Sunil Udasi, chief public relations officer, Central Railway.

The MNS has reiterated that it will continue to take action against illegal hawkers till the authorities come up with a concrete solution. "We have warned the hawkers not to set up business here henceforth else they will face the music from our activists. Commuters have been facing the brunt of these vendors who squat outside the station blocking the road," said MNS Thane president Avinash Jadhav.

Telangana govt to ink MoU for setting up rail coach factory

Telangana govt to ink MoU for setting up rail coach factory

The Telangana government will soon tie up with a consortium of industries for setting up a rail coach factory in the state, a senior official said today.

Refusing the reveal more details citing non-disclosure agreement, the official said the exact date for signing the memorandum of understanding (MoU) has not yet been fixed as the state Assembly is slated to begin from October 27.

"The government is all set to enter into an MoU with some of the industries which are pioneers in the sector. The date for the MoU is not yet fixed. Tentatively, it may be some time during next week. It depends on the timings of the Assembly session," the official told PTI.
Though the state was promised a rail coach factory at Kazipet as part of Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, there has been no tangible progress on the issue so far.

When contacted, a senior official of South Central Railway said the land for setting up the coach unit has been identified and the state government is yet to hand over the land parcel to Railways.
"About 200 acres of land has been identified for the coach factory. Recently, railway officials had a meeting with Deputy Chief Minister Kadiyam Srihari on the issue. The land has to be handed over to us to proceed further," the railway official said.

The finer details, such as location of the plant and investment size, will be announced at the time of signing the agreement, the official added.

Rly station to get 90 CCTV cameras

The Bathinda railway station, which is one of the biggest junctions in Asia, is all set to install 90 closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras all around the city railway station. South Eastern Railway local trains collide in West Bengal, no major injuries

South Eastern Railway local trains collide in West Bengal, no major injuries

A local train collided with another from behind after coming onto the same track in West Bengal’s East Midnapore district on Sunday, a railway official said. The accident took place in Panskura railway junction station on the Howrah-Kharagpur line under the South Eastern Railway. Railway authorities said that no one sustained injuries in the accident as both trains were at a very low speed. The locals, however, said that at least 10 people were injured and given first aid in the station. “Midnapore Howrah local was about to leave the Panskura station when another train Balichak local knocked it from behind. Both trains were immediately stopped. There was no major collision as both trains were at a low speed,” Sanjoy Ghosh, Chief Public Relations Officer of South Eastern Railway, told IANS. He said in the automatic signalling system, the trains heading towards the same direction, are allowed to come on the same track while maintaining a specific distance.

“The trains can be on the same track, but they should not come so close to each other. Whether it was a signalling fault or a human error, is a matter of inquiry,” Ghosh clarified.

The officer said there was no disruption in train services after the accident.

“Though the down line was unusable for some time after the accident, the train service was not disrupted as there are three channels in the station. The other two channels were used for passing the trains.”

Crisis-ridden Indian Railways Bring Exciting Plans to Speed up Over 500 Long-distance Trains

Indian Railways, IR, amid growing safety concerns, has plans aimed at adding more vigor to rail travel. It has grand plans to reduce the running times of over 500 long-distance popular trains from
The new plan would see some of the major trains to speed up as per this new innovative railway time table. For example:November 2017; the reduction proposed to vary being between 15 minutes and two hours. IR will like to implement the new changes without affecting the current railway fares while increasing revenue. This is a part of an overhaul of the rail system of increasing the average speed of existing trains. The new timings will be updated in the November timetable of the railways.
-the Guwahati-Indore Special covering its 2,330-km journey 115 minutes earlier.
-Bhopal-Jodhpur Express which will reach 95 minutes early
-Ghazipur-Bandra Terminus Express will cover its 1,929 km journey 95 minutes early
IR is planning to:
-review permanent current speed restrictions
-conduct an internal audit in which over 40 trains including mail and express will have super-fast services.
-reduce halt timings of trains
-eliminate stoppages of trains at stations where footfall is less
-maximise the use of the existing rolling stock
-upgrade track and infrastructure,
-each railway division will have at least 2-4 hours for maintenance tasks.
-introduce automatic signaling and
-utilize more the new Linke-Hofmann-Busch coaches that allow a 130 kmph top speed.
All these factors will enable the trains consume less journey time.

I may now reach home early
These plans to transform Indian Railways involve PM Narendra Modi’s extensive projects like green corridors, speed trains and electrification. Also the railway minister is keen on eliminating the number of train derailments and accidents. There have been eight railway ministers over the last eight years. Soon after taking charge as the new Railway Minister, Piyush Goyal had made it clear that improving the infrastructure and passengers’ safety is his top priority. Goyal had laid out an extensive plan to “transform” IR, which has been struggling with issues since ages.
Rail users in India know very well what IR needs to do foremost:
-make it safer,
-modernise,
-focus on eliminating unmanned level crossings,
-speed up track renewal,
-use technology for track maintenance, and
-go after revenue by transforming marketing.
But to advance productively along these lines, the supreme requirement will be to revolutionize the notorious IR work culture and renovate administration in the organization that would motivate its workforce. The decision to merge the Railway Budget with the Union Budget did not boost the employees’ morale. This now urgently calls for measures like getting railway men off duties at officers’ homes to back into operations, and putting an end to the tipping of catering staff on board. Something has to be done to eradicate “departmentalism”, or interdepartmental rivalry. It has so far remained unchanged despite several attempts for years about changing it. If this is not done and, more importantly, if the pace of doing things is not speeded up, and then it does not matter whether there is a new set of directorates which suggests speeding up of trains or work continues through the existing structure.
IR has been battling hard to reduce, if not eliminate accidents substantially and improve the punctuality of trains. One only hopes that the trains just manage to maintain their schedule which is the least which a humble traveler anticipates from IR. And, there should not be another spate of rail accidents.

Govt. may have to foot bill for rail safety fund

Govt. may have to foot bill for rail safety fund

The Ministry of Railways may ask the Finance Ministry to fund its share of the railway safety fund this year as the public utility is staring at an earnings shortfall of at least ₹10,000 crore in 2017-18, sources said.

With earnings deficit, the Ministry of Railways may find it difficult to contribute its share towards the newly- constituted Rashtriya Rail Sanraksha Rosh (RRSK) – a dedicated fund for critical safety-related works, a Ministry official said on the condition of anonymity.

 Earnings shortfall

The Indian Railways’ income stood at ₹80,519 crore till September compared with ₹76,405 crore till September last year. However, the actual income was 8.45% lower than the targeted earnings till September this year. The Railways had set a target of earning ₹1.88 lakh crore in 2017-18 against ₹1.65 lakh crore in 2016-17.

“We are looking at an earnings deficit of at least ₹10,000 crore by the end of this financial year. We may demand Finance Ministry to fund the entire amount towards RRSK for current financial year in the pre-budget meeting next month,” the Ministry official said. The Finance Ministry is scheduled to meet the officials of the Ministry of Railway on November 10 for pre-budget discussions to finalise the revised estimates for 2017-18 and budget estimates for 2018-19.

 Safety fund

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had announced the setting up a special safety fund with a corpus of more than ₹1 lakh crore over a period of five years in Budget 2017-18. According to the plan, while the Finance Ministry would contribute ₹15,000 crore annually towards the fund, the Ministry of Railways would fund the balance ₹5,000 crore every year.

In the first six months of the current financial year, the Indian Railways had utilised a quarter of the safety fund as it had spent ₹5,031 crore from the RRSK. Although the Railways’ passenger and goods earnings had increased 4.5% and 8.4% respectively till September this year compared with the last year, its sundry earnings had declined sharply by 35.7% during this period.

Income from non-fare revenues, including land lease, advertising, PSU dividends and catering department, form part of the sundry earnings.

Minister of Railways Piyush Goyal had said in an interview to The Hindu last month that the utility was willing to spend unlimited funds on safety which would be a top priority for him. “In my working, there is no budget for safety. Whatever (fund) is required we will spend,” Mr. Goyal had said.

Meanwhile, the Finance Ministry advised the Ministry of Railways to prioritise deploying RRSK funds on areas that reduce chances of human error and ensure training of safety staff.

Railways BRTS bridge to be completed soon

Railways BRTS bridge to be completed soon

The railways will commence tonight the work to place massive cemented blocks over the railway lines to construct the incomplete portion of the BRTS bridge.Vipan Purohit, Director, Amritsar railway station, said the civil work would stretch over a month. He informed that it would halt rail traffic for three to four hours during nights. However, it would not be a regular affair as it would depend upon the pending work. It required the diversion of only one train, he said. After a long wait, heavy cranes have arrived for laying slabs for the ambitious BRTS project over the level crossing near the ROB. The railways is constructing the 52-metre long concrete and steel bridge for the state government’s BRTS project at a cost of nearly Rs 15 crore. As many as three slabs of 170 tonnes each would be laid underneath the concrete slab of the bridge. In order to lift and place the extremely heavy girders, cranes from Delhi and the NCR region have been brought. The construction of the bridge would see completion of the 30.73-km track for the BRTS project, which is aimed at reducing the traffic mess and bottlenecks in the city.

City station gets director

The railways has appointed Vipan Purohit as the director of the city railway station that was categorised as A-1 station last year. The availability of director would ensure that the station functioned in the capacity of a centre of excellence for passengers.Earlier, the non-availability of a regular official at this post compelled the railways authorities to shift High Officer Requisite (HOR) quota to Ferozepur, which houses divisional headquarters, under which the Amritsar railway station falls.

Railway to give more teeth to land and station redevelopment bodies

Railway to give more teeth to land and station redevelopment bodies

The railway ministry has decided to give more powers to its two nodal bodies to redevelop stations and its land, a senior official said. The two bodies – Railway Land Development Authority (RLDA), and Indian Railways Station Development Corporation (IRSDC) – are set to get powers to deal with all big decisions on the commercial use of railway land and developing stations, the official said.

The ministry has also formed a high-powered committee which will give recommendations on ways to further strengthen the bodies which will, in turn, speed up the execution of projects.

“The issue of exploiting railway land for commercial use is being looked into afresh and the organisation handling this subject – RLDA – is being further strengthened and empowered to take care of this work effectively, especially big land parcels,” Railway Board chairman, Ashwani Lohani, told PTI.

“Similarly, in the case of Station Redevelopment Program (SRP), we have decided to expedite their operations by strengthening the IRSDC further,” Lohani said.

The decisions have been taken based on directions issued by Railway Minister Piyush Goyal. The minister has made it clear, in his meetings with the members of the board, that no department can work in silos and strengthening existing bodies and empowering them should be the goal to deliver work faster, an official said.

The committee’s plan, the official said, will be the blueprint for other such bodies.

“So, now, all the land-related projects will be handled by one department – RLDA – and all station-related decisions will be taken by the IRSDC. Basically, there will be clarity in the processes involved,” said the official, adding that this will expedite processes as files will move faster within the departments.

Similarly, the ‘One ICT’ (information, communication, and technology) plan is working as a core group within the IT Directorate and not as a separate body.

“Now, it will be part of the bigger IT directorate which works on all IT infrastructure-related activities of the national transporter,” the official said.

The ‘One ICT’ was created to set up an integrated software that would bring various functions of the railways — passenger reservation, movement of goods trains, asset management and other functional requirements of the national transporter — under one roof.

“The minister’s focus is on strengthening and empowerment of field offices and field functionaries through delegation of powers, simplification of processes, total clarity on the implementation strategy.. These steps to bring related aspects of operations under one nodal body is a step in that direction,” Lohani said.

Goyal has told the officials that streamlining file movement and communication between different departments would ensure that safety projects are completed in time.

In fact, after the Elphinstone bridge stampede in Mumbai, Goyal had also given unlimited powers to the General Managers for 18 months for safety-related issues and questioned why the file for the tender of an additional FOB was delayed.

“The minister has motivated railway employees to adapt new work culture and work in a mission mode to meet the targets and achieve results,” the official said.

Railway Minister travels in Kota Jan Shatabdi Express, takes feedback from passengers to improve services

Railway Minister Piyush Goyal on Sunday travelled in the Kota Jan Shatabdi Express and took feedback from passengers for improvement of railway services. The Union minister reportedly inspected the second-class coach of the Kota-bound train and interacted with the co-passengers between Mathura Junction and Shri Mahabir ji. Before boarding the train from New Delhi’s Hazrat Nizamuddin station, Goyal also interacted with the commuters at the station and took note of the passenger amenities and other facilities, the Northern Railways wrote on Twitter.

Following the spate of train derailments in the recent past and the Elphinstone foot overbridge stampede in Mumbai that claimed more than 20 lives, the Indian Railways has been focussing hard on ensuring safety of passengers. In efforts to ensure smooth functioning of Railways, Goyal has also given unlimited powers to the General Managers for 18 months for safety-related issues and questioned why the file for the tender of an additional FOB at Elphinstone was delayed. “The minister has motivated railway employees to adapt new work culture and work in a mission mode to meet the targets and achieve results,” an official told PTI.

Goyal had also directed the national carrier to incorporate “innovative timetabling” under which running time of popular trains would reduce by 15 minutes to two hours. The Indian Railways has also started the exercise of an internal audit through which 50 mail and express trains will be upgraded to super-fast services. This is part of an overhaul of the rail system of increasing the average speed of existing trains.

Surat to see Rs 4,650-crore railway station redevelopment

Surat to see Rs 4,650-crore railway station redevelopment

Poll-bound Gujarat is likely to see a Rs 4,650-crore redevelopment plan for Surat’s railway station.
Indian Railways (IR) will be tying up with the state government and the local body to pool land belonging to all three, a first. The redeveloped station is intended as a multi-model transport hub, with train, commuter rail and bus connectivity. The project is likely to be commissioned by December 2018.
“The redevelopment plan will be announced soon. We are expecting an expense of Rs 1 crore a sq ft. The money will be put in by the government,” said an official.
About Rs 650 crore would be spend on station redevelopment. The other Rs 4,000 crore would be to develop a commercial complex connected to the multi-modal transport hub.

“A joint venture for undertaking the project will be formed soon,” said the source.
Earlier, the government had invited global bids for the station but got lukewarm response. For the revised project, a concept design has been made by architects C P Kukreja Associates. IR is likely to form a joint venture for this with the state government and local bodies, the area to be developed on a revenue-sharing model. Last year, a memorandum of understanding was signed between IR, Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation and Surat Municipal Corporation in this regard.
The plan is for the railways to hold 63 per cent stake in the project, the state government about 34 per cent and the remaining three per cent by the local body.
By the plan, the redeveloped stations will provide amenities like digital signage, escalators, self-ticketing counters, executive lounges, restaurants, malls, theatres and Wi-Fi.
“This is going to change the face of Surat; we want to make it (the station) one of the largest in Asia. The 140-metre building will be the tallest in the city. A 300-room five-star hotel will be attached to it,” the official added. For the hotel, operational rights have already been given to the Leela group.
Earlier, the Wanda group from China had shown interest in both Gandhinagar and Surat stations but the smaller size (around Rs 400 crore each) of the then designed projects had made it less lucrative for global majors. This was after roadshows in Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

The Railway Board had reviewed its redevelopment policy after tepid responses from companies for the 23 stations put for bidding in February 2017. On an average redevelopment of a station is expected to cost Rs 400 crore; major ones as in Delhi and Mumbai could see investment up to Rs 15,000 crore.

Railways inquire into allegations of extra coach for HRD minister’s staff

Railways inquire into allegations of extra coach for HRD minister’s staff

The Railway Board on Sunday constituted an inquiry into allegations that an extra coach was attached to Padmavati Express on the request of the private secretary of Union Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Prakash Javadekar.

According to a news report, Vinay Srivastava, the Minister’s private secretary and a 1992-batch Indian Railway Service of Mechanical Engineers official, who was travelling with his wife and two children, had requested for seats on Padmavati Express (train number 19207) between Lucknow and Delhi railway station.

Following the request, an extra coach was attached at the last moment that delayed the train and caused chaos at the Lucknow railway station on Saturday, according to the report.

Both Mr. Srivastava and the Railway Ministry have denied the allegations.

“The Railway Board has decided to conduct an inquiry into the matter. Prima facie it seems that many passengers were unable to get a confirmed ticket due to the festival rush. An extra coach was attached to the train to accommodate the passengers. It was mere coincidence that one of the passengers was HRD Minister’s private secretary. The booking for the extra coach was announced at the ticket counter,” Northern Railway chief public relations officer Neeraj Sharma said.

‘Routine affair’

Mr. Sharma said additional coaches were regularly attached to clear rush on trains. However, Railway officials didn’t clarify why a single coach with half AC first class and half AC two-tier seats were attached to the train to accommodate more passengers instead of an AC three-tier coach.

“I was on a holiday and like any other ordinary passenger. I was travelling with my wife and two children. I had not made any request for an extra coach. It’s impossible. I am not such a senior functionary whose request will be heeded by the Railways,” Mr. Srivastava told The Hindu. He however, said he had requested the Railways for a seat on the train under its emergency quota.

Humpback Road railway crossing closed to traffic

Langford has closed access to Humpback Road at the E&N Railway crossing.

Emergency vehicles will be able to use the road, but general traffic will not.

The City of Langford said the closing was imposed by the Island Corridor Foundation as a condition of the E&N crossing installed at the new West Shore Parkway.

The 3.5-kilometre, $22.5-million parkway opened this month. It connects the Trans-Canada Highway and Sooke Road, providing a north-south connection between the two major arteries. The road includes roundabout intersections, cycling lanes, wide sidewalks, transit stops and artificial turf medians.

Irwin Road was extended in July to provide a connection between Humpback Road and West Shore Parkway.

BEIJING, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) -- The new high-speed trains, Fuxing, carried 460,000 passengers between Beijing and Shanghai in their first full month of operations at maximum speed, Beijing railway bureau said Saturday.

On Sept. 21, China increased the maximum speed of Fuxing trains on the Beijing-Shanghai high-speed railway to 350 kilometers per hour.

Fuxing trains are also used on Beijing-Guangzhou high-speed railway and Beijing-Tianjin intercity rail, but they are allowed to run at 300 kph only for the time being.

Fuxing trains on the Beijing-Guangzhou line reached 100 percent capacity, with 420,000 passengers carried.

Building on platform 6 side of Bhubaneswar station to be ready by November

Building on platform 6 side of Bhubaneswar station to be ready by November

BHUBANESWAR: A new station building, which is under construction on platform no-6 of the city railway station, will be ready by November. The East Coast Railway (ECoR) is geared up to inaugurate the building within a few days.

It will accommodate the crowd coming from old station bazaar and Cuttack-Road side of the station. It will have facilities like waiting hall, enquiry counter, booking halls, parking lots and other security features including installation of CCTV cameras.

Platform number 1 is the main entrance of the A1 category station. It has station building with other required facilities. But the platform 6 has no building and other facilities like parking and proper booking halls.

Due to extension of platform number 6 during Nabakalebar festival in 2015, the station building on Old Station Bazaar side had been demolished. The platform 6 side entrance remained open since then. Later the ECoR decided to build a station building on this side to provide facilities to the passengers.

The building work started in August last year. Estimated cost of the project is Rs 1.7 crore, ECoR sources said.

A senior railway officer said the platform 6 side will have all the facilities like platform 1 side in a phased manner. Unauthorized entry into the station will be stopped after the commissioning of the building. Baggage scanner and other facilities will also be made available on the side, he added.

"We are continuously trying to bring about improvements in services to passengers both at railway stations and on trains. We are in touch with our passengers through a regular feedback mechanism and working on deficiencies pointed out by them," said Brij Mohan Agarwal, divisional railway manager of Khurda Road.

Agarwal said lift services will be available at all the six platforms of the station. Senior citizens, patients and persons with disabilities will get benefit out of the service, he added.

Railways to ‘review’ garbage situation

Railways to ‘review’ garbage situation

The Western Railway (WR) will be conducting a 'review' of the garbage which has collected outside the Divisional Railway Manager's (DRM) office at Mumbai Central. Several complaints have been made regarding the collected garbage. The railways, which claimed to be adhering to the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, is now on a back foot.

The WR DRM's office, which is located near the coach center at Mumbai Central, witnesses the dumping of garbage from long distance trains which halt at the terminus for maintenance. This is not collected for several days leading to a stench.

"The stench and filth is unbearable and many of our colleagues are falling sick due to the garbage which has been dumped outside the offices. It is not collected for weeks which piles up leading to diseases. Several complaints have been made but we continue to face the problems," said a WR employee on the condition of anonymity.

The frequency at which the garbage is collecting at the spot is now resulting in piles on the road leading to the DRM office and its adjoining offices. "We have been asked to keep our offices and surroundings clean but the DRM office itself has garbage outside its building. The Railways should come up with a solution to resolve the issues," said the official.

Hitachi eager to boost railway sales amid industry revamp

Hitachi eager to boost railway sales amid industry revamp

MILAN -- Hitachi wants to increase sales from its railway business 50% by 2022 as industry realignment accelerates across the world. In a recent interview with The Nikkei, President Toshiaki Higashihara explained how Hitachi intends to take on global rivals.

Q: What do you make of athe planned merger of railway operations between Germany's Siemens and France's Alstom?

A: The deal will create a huge group and will be a threat. Industry leader CRRC [of China] is also accelerating global expansion along the lines of the Chinese government's Belt and Road Initiative, which is designed to establish a wide economic area beyond China. Environmental [regulations] will likely be stricter in the future. But rolling stock, which is the mainstay product of all railway manufacturers, has a relatively small profit margin, so greater scale will not directly translate into high growth.

Q: Still, would bigger companies not have better chances of outbidding rivals in international railway auctions?

A: Hitachi acquired from Italian companies businesses that make railway cars and railway signals in November 2015. Since then, their earnings have been better than expected. In July this year, it won a sizable contract to build railway cars and a traffic system for the Baltimore Metro Subway Link. In 2018, it will begin shipping high-speed trains to the U.K. Italy now accounts for 40% of the Hitachi group's rolling stock production globally.

In the U.K., where we also have a local base, there is strong demand for rolling stock to replace aging equipment. Hitachi plans to split production and sales operations between Japan, the U.K. and Italy in order to speed up global expansion. By the time all three global bases reach cruising speed, expected by the year ending March 2022, sales from our railway operations will be between 700 billion yen and 800 billion yen ($6.18 billion and $7.07 billion) without any external help.

Q: What is the thinking behind Hitachi's aim of increasing sales from its railway operations to 1 trillion yen by the early 2020s?

A: Surely, our own efforts to grow will not be enough to meet that goal. We might need to decide on large-scale acquisitions or partnership deals to beat that 1 trillion yen target. We are still considering options. We will make investments that will lead us to growth.

Q: How is Hitachi going to distinguish itself from others ?

: The internet of things, which connects everything online, will be the key. For instance, demand is high in Europe [as much as in Japan] for services such as providing technological support to make shopping malls at train stations more efficient by analyzing flows of people using sensors and cameras. Such devices can also be used to prevent crime. Another example will be a new service to link railway operations and autonomous driving to help people get to their destinations in the shortest time.

REVEALED: South Western Railway launches public consultations on proposed new rail services in Hampshire from December 2018

REVEALED: South Western Railway launches public consultations on proposed new rail services in Hampshire from December 2018

A MAJOR shake up of rail timetables could strip some stations of their direct services to London - but other commuters could enjoy faster journeys to the capital.

South Western Railway has launched a public consultation to introduce new timetable changes in December 2018, which will change the frequency and times of trains across the county.

Proposed timetable changes, intended to come in from December 2018, could halve direct trains between Weymouth and London Waterloo.

Direct services to the capital could be discontinued from New Forest stations including Totton, Sway, Ashurst and Hinton Admiral.

Alongside this, St Deny's in Southampton will also gain a regular service into London Waterloo twice an hour while journey times between Southampton and London will be six minutes faster, with ten-car trains on most services.

South Western Railway, which is owned by FirstGroup-MTR, took over the South Western franchise in August having been operated by Stagecoach-owned South West Trains for 20 years.

In their franchise bid, FirstGroup-MTR pledged to deliver new and better trains, more seats, improved service frequencies and quicker journey times for South Western Railway passengers.

The consultation, which opened earlier this month, will run until Friday, December 22 to allow users to voice their opinions on the planned timetable changes.

Andy Mellors, managing director for South Western Railway, said: "We really want to encourage as much feedback as possible on our proposals so that we can implement a timetable that truly meets the requirements of our passengers and the communities we serve."

But Stephen Joseph, chief executive of Campaign for Better Transport said: "The train operators need to spell out in concrete who will benefit from this new consultation and who will lose out.

"Passengers will hope the new franchisees can make real improvements in the SWT services."

Over 500 trains to cut down travel time by up to 2 hours

Good news for train passengers! In a major overhaul of train schedules in India, the Indian Railways, under the leadership of minister Piyush Goyal is likely to reduce the travel time of over 500 long-distance trains by up to 2 hours. A senior railway official said, innovative timetabling will soon be introduced, which will reduce the travel time by 15 minutes to up to 2 hours.Effective from November, the train timings will be implemented after the internal audit of 50 mail and express trains that will be upgraded to super-fast services. The official further added, "Our plan is to maximise the use of the existing rolling stock. It can be done in two ways - if we have a train that is waiting somewhere to return, we can use it during the lie over period. In the new timetable around 50 such trains which will be run like this. Fifty-one trains will immediately see reduced run time from one to three hours. This will go up to more than 500 trains."

The audit exercise is a part of the overhaul of the rail system to increase the average speed of the existing trains, the official said.

Some of the trains that will experience a major change in the arrival timings include the Bhopal-Jodhpur Express that will reach 95 minutes early. The Guwahati-Indore Special train will complete its 2,330-km journey 115 minutes early and the 1929-km journey of the Ghazipur-Bandra Terminus Express will be completed 95 minutes earlier. In fact, the halt time of many trains have also been reduced and some stoppages have also been struck out from a train's itinerary, depending on the number of footfalls it receives.

The new timetable will also provide each railway division two to four hours for maintenance works. The railways is also in the process of reviewing permanent speed restrictions.
