UNION RAILWAY MINISTER DEDICATES / INAUGURATES SEVEN FACILITIES AND PASSENGER AMENITIES OVER TAMIL NADU

Thiru Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu, Hon’ble Union Minister of Railways at a function held at Coimbatore Jn. Railway Station today dedicated / Inaugurated/ laid foundation stone for a number of facilities and Passenger Amenities at Coimbatore Jn, Thudiyalur, Periyanaikanpalayam and Tiruppur railway stations in the presence of Shri S.P. Velumani, Hon’ble Minister for Municipal Administration, Rural Development & implementation of Special Programme, Govt. of Tamil Nadu and Hon’ble Members of Parliament.

Hon’ble MPs of the area, while appreciating Railways, also gave their demands and representations for development of Railways in their respective constituencies.

Speaking o­n the occasion, the Hon’ble Railway Minister assured that a new overnight Uday Express will be introduced between Coimbatore and KSR Bengaluru as soon as the design is ready. Till such time, the railway officials have been advised to examine the feasibility of introducing a train between Coimbatore and KSR Bengaluru. He expressed happiness in the interest taken by MPs representing the requirements of the state. He requested the State Government to come forward for a partnership with Railways to speed up developmental activities. The key factor of development of Railways in India is infrastructure development for which Railway is giving maximum attention like doubling, trebling and speed corridor.

Once the Dedicated Freight Corridor is commissioned, we will be able to speed up passenger services resulting from spare capacity.Railways has created lot of initiatives for freight development with reduced rates and increased carriage of freight.Integral Coach Factory is being assigned the job of modernising 500 plus coaches. Railways has taken several appreciable initiatives in improving passenger amenities at stations like bio toilets, escalators, lifts, paid waiting rooms, Wi fi services, etc. Railways has already completed 140 Wi fi services at stations. Very soon, large number of stations are likely to be covered. The Railway Minister also congratulated the participation of M/s. Lakshmi Machine Works under CSR in renovating Periyanaikanpalayam railway station and welcomed such association from all corporate fraternity to speed up various developmental works.



The investment in the projects has gone up 170% in Tamil Nadu compared to average investment during the last 3 years which is approximately Rs.2300 crores. The problems of punctuality, lack of speed and insufficient carrying capacity was a result of lack of investment. The present Govt. has already boosted investment by associating organisations like M/s. Lakshmi Machine Works. Many projects are taken up under station redevelopment programme which will not o­nly beautify stations but also enhance the passenger experience at the station while generating revenue to the Railways. Railways is focussing to be a modern, efficient, transparent and safe mode of transport partner to the country.



Details of the Projects and Passenger Amenities that were Dedicated / Inaugurated during the function at Coimbatore Jn. Railway Station:-



INAUGURATION OF SKYWALK AND ESCALATOR FOR PF 1/A COIMBATORE JUNCTION RAILWAY STATION

Skywalk with escalator aims at connecting the circulating area to the Platform 1-A. This serves as a solution for the congestion experienced at Coimbatore Jn Railway station allowing passengers to access platforms from old as well as new subways. This project has been developed mainly to make the Platforms accessible for the differently-abled Passengers.Commissioned at a cost of Rs. 2.1 crore, the Escalator has the capacity of handling 9000 persons/hour .

INAUGURATION OF APP BASED CAB SERVICES AT COIMBATORE JUNCTION RAILWAY STATION

Southern Railway aims at using Information Technology as a tool in serving the passengers. A pioneer project providing app based cab services is being planned at Coimbatore Jn. Various initiatives have been taken to tie up with cab operators for commencing app based Cab Services at Coimbatore Jn. Users can book the Cab services through their Mobile Phones/PC using the Service Provider's Application. Presently, the services of UBER has been initiated for a period of three months. An area of 339 sqm in the main entry at Coimbatore Jn has been earmarked for parking 20 cars for rendering app based cab services.

LAYING OF FOUNDATION STONE FOR IMPROVEMENT OF FRONTAGE OF COIMBATORE JN RAILWAY STATION:

Changing the facet of a railway station is undertaken for better utilization of space and to address the growing demand for more passenger amenities.Coimbatore Jn has better scope for development given its location and burgeoning footfall.Presently, the frontage of Coimbatore Railway Station is taken up for improvementby providing the following at an estimated cost of Rs. 75 lakhs.

1.The present main entry concourse area is planned to be extended duly removing the existing fixed structure.

2.The stairs connecting PF No.1A to the main entry concourse area is planned to be widened to facilitate easy access.

3.A Food plaza by IRCTC has been planned to be constructed in the Main Entry Circulating area.

4.An executive Lounge for VIPs and eminent guests is proposed in the first floor near the Retiring Room Complex.

5.To kindle the interest in rail enthusiasts and to showcase the rich heritage of Railways, a vintage Steam loco will be put o­n displayin Coimbatore Junction.

LAYING OF FOUNDATION STONE FOR MULTI-LEVEL TWO WHEELER PARKING AT COIMBATORE JN RAILWAY STATION

Presently, at Coimbatore Jn, the available circulating area in both the entries has been opened for accommodating 900 Four wheelers and 1115 Two wheelers o­n an average per day. Multi level two wheeler parking is the solution to accommodate more number of two wheelers in less space meeting the growing demands of public.This is also a source of additional revenue for Railways. The proposed multi level two wheeler parking can park more than 1000 vehicles in Two Storey building (Ground+2) thereby allocating the existing space for further development. The estimated cost of the project is Rs.2.29 crores, where a Parcel Complex is also planned to be built along with it.

INAUGURATION OF THUDIYALUR HALT RAILWAY STATION

Thudiyalur is situated 10 kms away from Coimbatore City.The erstwhile Thudiyalur Halt station was in operation until 1983.As years passed by, the area had developed due to setting up of various Educational Instituitions and IT companies. Besides, the working class populace commuting in the CoimbatoreMettupalayam sector has increased manifold.

To address the growing demands of the people of neigh bouring villages, it was proposed to build a new halt station at Thudiyalur. With the Shramdhan corpus received from Coimbatore Corporation the construction work ofthe new Halt stationhas been completed at an approximate cost of Rs. 4.5 crore. The new station is equipped with rail level platforms.

DEDICATION OF NEW STATION BUILDING AT PERIYANAIKANPALAYAM RAILWAY STATION UNDER CSR

Southern Railway has been exploring avenues to modernize and revamp stations. Corporate Social Responsibility is o­ne such corpus wherein private players join hands with Railways for provision of various facilities at stations.



New Station building at Periyanaikanpalayam has been constructed contemplating easy accessibility of Differently-abled. Ramps, booking office and toilets are also provided for the benefit ofpassengers. The renovation work ofthe station building taken up by M/s. Lakshmi Machine Works Ltd., under CSR has been completed at an approximate cost of Rs. 1.77 crore.

INAUGURATION OF LIFT AND PAID AC WAITING HALL AT TIRUPPUR RAILWAY STATION

Tiruppur, a major “cotton textile hub” has apopulation of 27 lakhs.Tiruppur, an 'A' category station under Salem Division of Southern Railway, handles stoppage for 53 Express and 5 Passenger Trains. o­n an average, 12000 originatingpassengers use this station fetching an earnings of Rs.18 lakhs per day.

An Air Conditioned Paid Waiting hall has been constructed in 2nd Platform at a cost of Rs.10 Lakhs with the provision of separate toilet facilities for gents and ladies.This will benefit the passenger to have a good rest, while waiting for the trains. Television facility is also being provided. Usage charges of Rs.15/- is being collected o­n per passenger basis for o­ne hour. The seating capacity of the AC Waiting Hall is 48.

Two Lifts are provided in the FOB connecting PF No.1 & 2 at a total cost of Rs. 55 Lakhs. This is a boon to the passengers utilizing the station, where down and up trains are dealt separately. 13 persons can be accommodated at a time to traverse in each of these lifts.

The Railway Minister also attended Coimbatore Samyukta Gowda Saraswata Sabha, a special address to the member o­n a special invitation. During his special address, Shri Suresh Prabhu expressed happiness to be among the society, that isphilanthropically rich and committed to the society. He expressed happiness o­n the various services rendered by the society to the members and other needy people. He said country has got a potential to become a developed nation provided the entrepreneurs are taken care. India has got large number of people in private business who can provide job opportunities and revenue by way of tax that will help investment in needy areas. Railway Is focussing to invest more than 8500 Cr. in 5 year term, completing all old works taken up so that demand for safe, comfortable journey can be met.













Regarding GST, he has asked the people to welcome GST in an unbiased manner as the tax provided by the customers will be remitted by the business people to Govt. which will be used for various development works. GST is a transparent and well devised system which will be the backbone for nation’s growth. He wished the good work done by the society should continue. Smt.Vanathi Srinivasan was also present.
