Railways to renovate A1, A category stations

PATNA: The railways has planned to renovate all A1 and A-category stations and make them of international standards.

Patna Junction is not included in the list of stations to be covered in the first phase of the plan. However, Ranchi is among the 23 stations to be revamped in the first phase.

According to a Railway Board official, the railways has invited bids from private players for the purpose. The civil work will start soon after finalising the deal with private agencies, he said, adding all modern facilities on a par with world-class stations of European countries would be provided at these 23 stations in the first phase.
Besides, a separate Indian Railway Station Development Corporation Ltd (IRSDC) has been set up to give impetus to the station development plan at other major stations. At least 12 stations have been shortlisted for their development in the first phase under this initiative. However, Patna Junction does not figure even in this list of 12 stations.

According to sources, ECR's Patna, Gaya, Mughalsarai, Dhanbad, Muzaffarpur and Barauni stations were earlier listed as targets under the station development plan. The railways had even approved a food plaza outside Patna Junction either at Karbigahiya end or at the main entrance. The plan has not materialised so far.

Thye sources said the IRSDC would undertake projects to develop major stations for their proper commercial exploitation. Restaurants, shopping areas and food plaza are planned to be developed to help the railways earn more revenue from railway premises, the sources said.

The railways had earlier sent letters to the states, seeking their cooperation to develop stations under the IRSDC initiative. The IRCON and Rail Land Development Authority have been assigned the task to complete the first phase of station development plan.
