REVIVAL OF EIR 21 - THE WORLD'S OLDEST WORKING STEAM LOCOMOTIVE

A Heritage Special featuring Steam Locomotive EIR - 21 was successfully run from Chennai Egmore to Kodambakkam today, 10th September 2017.The World's Oldest working Steam Locomotive hauling a single coach left Chennai Egmore and arrived Kodambakkam today to the cheers of all gathered to witness the prestige of Railway Heritage.
Shri Vashishta Johri, General Manager, Southern Railway, accompanied by Shri P.K.Mishra, Additional General Manager, Southern Railway, Shri R.Kuppan, Chief Mechanical Engineer, Shri Naveen Gulati, Divisional Railway Manager, Chennai Division, Shri Elavarasan, Chief Signal and Telecommunication Engineer, and other Railway Officials were present during the run. Railway Passengers and Public witnessed the run.

So, far, the following Heritage runs have been organized by Southern Railway:-

1stHeritage Run - Chennai Central to Avadi o­n 15th August, 2010.

2ndHeritage Run - Chennai Egmore to Guindy o­n 15th August, 2011.

3rdHeritage Run - Chennai Egmore to Guindy o­n 26th January, 2012.

4thHeritage Run - In commemoration of the 157th Anniversary from Chennai Central to Perambur o­n 06th February, 2012.

5thHeritage Run - Chennai Egmore to Guindy o­n 26th January, 2013.

This was the 6thHeritage Run from Chennai Egmore to Kodambakkam of the World’s Oldest Working Locomotive, the Express EIR 21, which is similar to Fairy Queen in appearance.

Loco Works, Perambur took the challenge of reviving the 162 year old steam loco ‘EXPRESS EIR 21’ in the year 2010. After withdrawal from service in 1909, this loco was kept exhibit at Jamalpur Workshops and Howrah Station for over 101 years. During this period this loco was in the sun and rain; many parts were corroded, some were missing, some were broken and some were not fit for use.

After the revival of this loco, the 1st Heritage Run of EIR 21 was conducted o­n 15.08.2010 from Chennai Central to Avadi with two coaches as a part of Independence Day celebrations.

2ndHeritage Run of EIR 21 was conducted o­n 15.08.2011 from Chennai Egmore to Guindy, covering a distance of 11 kms in 35 minutes. This time we used o­nly o­ne coach o­n realising the experience from the 1st Heritage Run. Huge crowd thronged all railway stations throughout the run for a glimpse of the World’s oldest steam loco and cherished the experience.

The 3rdHeritage Run was conducted o­n 26.01.2012 as part of the 63rd Republic Day celebrations from Chennai Egmore to Guindy with o­ne coach having 60 seats covering 11 kms in a maximum speed of 45 kmph.

The 4thHeritage Run in commemoration of the 157th Anniversary was conducted o­n 06.02.2012 from Chennai Central to Perambur with o­ne coach having 60 seats covering 5 kms.

The 5thHeritage Run was conducted o­n 26.01.2013 as part of the 64thRepublic Day celebrations from Chennai Egmore to Guindy with o­ne coach having 60 seats covering 11 kms.

The EIR 21 is also known to effortlessly adapt to modern day gizmos such as GPS based speedometer.
