Fire breaks out near St Neots railway station

A fire which broke out on the embankment near St Neots has caused delays for commuters this morning (October 15).

The fire was first reported at 7.23am and Great Northern reported that southbound services through St Neots had been affected.
The small embankment fire was dealt with quickly and the cause has been labelled "unknown or accidental" by Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue.

A spokesperson for Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue said: “We were called at 7.23am to a small embankment fire. The cause was unknown or accidental but was not caused by a train. “

Two engines were sent, one from St Neots and another from Gamlingay and the fire was dealt with quickly.

Great Northern tweeted: "Southbound services through St Neots subject to disruption following emergency services dealing with an incident near the railway."

Delays of up to 20 minutes have affected Virgin east coast trains travelling southbound between Peterborough and Stevenage.
