North Andhra leaders optimistic about rail zone

Developments in the last one week over the issue raise hopes of people

Leaders of North Andhra region, who have been awaiting the formation of a new railway zone with its headquarters in Visakhapatnam for nearly two decades, are optimistic that their aspirations will come true at last.

Going by the developments during the last few weeks, they opine that Visakhapatnam with its advantages like over 700 acres of railway land, 200 acres of which is around the Visakhapatnam junction, location of two ports, presence of the Diesel Loco Shed (DLS), Electrical Loco Shed (ELS), a modern-Coaching Complex for maintenance of coaches, including LHB coaches, will win hands down in the race for the headquarters.
Uttrandhra Charcha Vedika convener and former Minister Konathala Ramakrishna, who met Railway Minister Piyush Goyal, suggested formation of new railway division either at Jajpur-Keonjhar Road or Rayagada and including it in East Coast Railway (ECoR) to make for the de-linking of Waltair Division from ECoR.

To deal with the contentious issue of revenue splitting, and if splitting of Waltair division was inevitable, a new division can be formed comprising portion of KK line from Koraput-Kirandul, Koraput-Rayagada and Rayagada-Theruvali portions can be split to form a new division either at Rayagada or at Koraput.

A new zone with Visakhapatnam as headquarters should be formed fulfilling the long-pending demand and making Visakhapatnam independent of East Coast and South Central Railway, he asserted.

Mr. Ramakrishna felt that any attempt either by the BJP or the TDP leadership in AP to jeopardise the interests of Visakhapatnam region would lead to unrest among the people of North Andhra and people would teach a lesson to both the parties in the next elections. Twitter users while welcoming the Finance Minister’s reply in the Rajya Sabha that a decision would soon be taken on Vizag Railway Zone said that once it becomes operational, many pending works could be completed.

Unique protest

Meanwhile, YSR Congress Party activists, under the leadership of Samayam Hemanth Kumar, staged a unique protest seeking alms from motorists at Siripuram junction seeking implementation of the promises made in the AP Reorganisation Act, particularly the Vizag railway zone.
