Railways must explore modern coaches to retain passengers, Railway Board chairman says

Chairman of Railway Board Ashwani Lohani on Thursday said Indian Railways should explore modern coaches (rolling stock) as passengers have choices like airlines and are already migrating.

Lohani was speaking at the inaugural session of the International Rail Coach Expo (IRCE) hosted by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) here. The Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) and RITES are joint organisers of the event.

Lohani pointed out that the average speed of trains in the country was low and there was much to improve.

He was impressed with the changes in infrastructure, culture and people at the ICF and congratulated general manager S Mani for the same.

During his speech, Mani said he wanted a dedicated expo for trains and coaches and it was the first time that such a focussed expo was hosted in Chennai.

R Dinesh, MD of TVS logistics and chairman of CII's southern region, said that 20 companies in Spain had expressed interest in investing in the train and coach industry in India when he had visited that country recently. He hoped that the ICF would grow manifold in the next five years.

The International Rail Coach Expo is being held on the ICF RPF Parade Grounds here from May 17 to 19. Many reputed rail car and equipment builders are showcasing their technology and products at the expo.
