Railway line proposed by Indira in 1978 to become a reality soon

Bangalore: A railway line which was first proposed by the late prime minister Indira Gandhi, when she contested the Lok Sabha elections from Chikmagalur in 1978, will become operational soon.

According to sources, the railways has completed all the works on Kadur-Chikmagalur and Kolar-Chikballapur railway lines.

It has obtained clearances from the Rail Safety Commissioner to run trains on both the lines.

The railway officials said they are planning to inaugurate Kolar-Chikballapur railway line on November 8 and Kadur-Chikmagalur railway line on November 19. The dates were announced by Union Railway Minister Mallikarjun Kharge on Friday.

Meanwhile, South Western Railway’s Chief Administrative Officer Adesh Sharma said: “Both the railway lines are ready for inauguration and preparations are on.”

Kadur-Chikmagalur Railway Line

It was first proposed as a part of Kadur-Sakleshpur railway project by the late prime minister Indira Gandhi in 1978. Though, C K Jaffer Sharief sanctioned a survey of the railway line during his tenure as the Union railway minister, the project was sanctioned in 1996-97 budget and was taken up much later.

As the railways had delayed the implementation of the project due to lack of funds, the State government offered to fund the project on cost-sharing basis.

The 45-km railway line work has been completed at a cost of `280 crore and it passes through Bisilehalli, Sakharayapatna and Kanivehalli.

Chikballapur-Kolar Railway Line

The railways undertook the gauge conversion work on the 96.5-km railway line between Kolar and Chickballapur nearly seven years ago.

The State government agreed to fund the project on cost sharing basis at the insistence of the former Union minister of state for railways K H Muniyappa to ensure that the project is completed on time. This work has been completed at a cost of `450 crore. It passes through Shiddlaghatta and Chintamani.
